Can Life be improved?

August 8th, 2012 by Jashodhara Purkayastha

Life has been given to us by God. Human being takes birth in this world with God’s permission, and willingness of oneself. Life is the combination of heredity, environment and God’s will. Many people believe that life is a combination of our Karma .i.e. cause –effect relationship. Life is also depended on our personality.

Personality is the total inborn quality, impulses, tendencies instinct and the tendencies acquired from the environment.

Watson, the father of behaviorism concluded:–“Personality is the sum total of activities that can be discovered by actual observations over a long period of time to give reliable information.”

While describing whether Life can be improved or not, the following points can be analyzed——

1. Personality is the product of Heredity and Environment.

2. It can be developed with the continuous interaction with the environment.

3. Social and cultural factors influence personality to a great extent.

4. Education and learning contribute toward development of personality.

5. According to Freud, Individual who has strong Ego are said to have a balanced personality as ego is capable of maintaining a balance between the superego and Id.

6. Adler on the other hand did not accept Freudian concept of sex urges but had given importance to self assertion. He gave more importance on Education and upbringing.

7. Karma is the integral part of Hindu Philosophy. Every action has its reaction. Every action whether physical or mental, creates a cause and subsequently bears a reaction or effect.

8. If intention is good and not harming anyone, it’s a good Karma, although it’s harsh.

9.   Take GOD‘s permission to do anything and everything that you think, and do so.

10.   Do the right thing according to the situation and without hurting anyone.

11. Do not blame the situation, it will change.

12. Pray and Thank God before eating.

!3. Whatever work one is doing should be put as God’s will, so that nothing is done wrong.

Life can be improved by the grace of God and doing every Karma consciously. If every action whether physical or mental is done with alert mind and asking permission of the Supreme, definitely one can improve the life.

Laws of Life

August 3rd, 2012 by Jashodhara Purkayastha

Swami Vivekananda is one of the favourite spiritual leaders of my life. One day when I was teaching Swami Vivekananda in my class, it came to my mind to discuss the laws of life. Fifteen laws were given by Swami. Some of them I would like to discuss in my own way.

1. Love is the law of life: Love is a very broad word. To understand Love, it needs a very broad mind. Love should not be considered as an article. It is not a concrete thing, it is an abstract that can not be measured. There are three definitions of love. The first one can be compared with the centre of the circle which is only for lust that is bodily pleasure. Second love is related to marriage, many radii in it much purer than the first one. The third love is intellectual love which touches the full circumference of the circle in which, there is no selfishness. Many people don’t understand the Love of Radha & Krishna. It comes under the third category, which is very divine.

2.Attitude: Today I was reading an article on attitude. Everything we see in this world can be taken in a positive outlook. Whatever comes in our way can be taken with the right spirit .”The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, the education, the money, than circumstances, than failure, than success, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company… a church… a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past… we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you… we are in charge of our attitudes.” – Charles Swindoll via Paul Biondich

3. Life is beautiful: It is said that after many births we get human life. We should utilize it in a meaningful way. We should create some productive work to make life beautiful. Whatever way we see the world, we experience those things in our life. There are good,  beautiful, and bad things available in this world, and we can choose the most beautiful items from that abundance. Beauty is hidden in the mind, We have to search for those precious beauties.

4. Feeling within: Our mind is a big unit. What we feel in the mind comes true. When the child is small, we tell them if you eat food properly you will become strong, and then he eats without putting us in any trouble. Immediately he shows us his muscles. This shows that he feels that he became stronger.

5.Free of attachment: We all believe that God resides within us. The moment we believe that God is sitting in this temple (body), we will be free of attachment.

6. You are the maker of own self: We all believe in the cause and effect theory.  Whatever action we do, there will be some effect of that action.  So never condemn anyone.

7. Helping: It is one of the values of life. If we help someone by giving money and he goes and drinks alcohol or smokes, that becomes an indirect bane for the person. So genuinely help the person.

8.Uphold your ideals: Our duty is to encourage everyone to live up to his own highest idea, and strive at the same time to make the ideal as near as possible to the truth.

9.Listening to your own soul: Vivekananda said “All knowledge that the world has ever received comes from the mind; the infinite library of the universe is in our own mind. “None can teach anyone as knowledge is hidden within himself.

10.True to yourself: The biggest sin is to cheat oneself. Have faith in own self.

11. Nothing is impossible: There is a saying—” Paribo na ekothati Bolio na aar, ek bar na parile dekho shotobaar” means Don’t say I can’t, If you can not do in one time try for hundred times— Nothing is impossible if taken the task in the right spirit.

12.Power within yourself: Human mind is a store power room with abundance. Open your eyes and focus on one point of light.

13.Always be a learner: Every step of our life is a learning experience. We learn from our children, our students, our neighbour, our maid, and even from strangers if we are learners. Our goal is to acquire knowledge. The source of knowledge is plenty. How we can gather this knowledge depends on our learning.

14.Be truthful: Truth differs from fact to fact. But some of the facts are universal truths. We should not fall into a trap by avoiding the truth.

15.Think differently: Great men and successful men think differently.
