Selfless Tree

September 4th, 2008 by Jashodhara Purkayastha

There were rows of tree in a lane. One day a tree asked another tree. “You are really lucky! So many people come, stand and take rest under your shade”.The tree replied, “Yes, I am proud of myself as my shade spreads every where, but sometimes I feel angry with people, because they give me nothing except trouble”. An old mango tree was eagerly listening to their conversation. He called those two trees and said, “I heard your conversation that is why I want to tell you something”.

Many many years ago, when the Earth was just born, a tree wanted to come to earth, but without God’s permission, nobody could come here. So it went to God to seek permission.

It asked, “God, why don’t you send me to the earth? I want to see the earth”. God replied, “I can send you to earth on one condition”. “One condition!” exclaimed the tree.God said, “I will send you, if you serve mankind and animals throughout your lifetime”.Tree was very happy.

It answered, “I agree to it, this will give happiness if I can serve them and the most important thing is that I will see the earth”. God granted permission and gave a seed to the man and asked him to dig the land deep and put the seed in it.

As the seed was carried by the man , it thought “I am very lucky as I will make the life and I will decorate the land and help the soil with my hard work”. The man did what God directed him. After some time, two leaves with small stem came out from the seed. When the baby plant came out, God appeared before it. The plant was very happy to see God in front of it. It bowed down and asked, “God! There must be something, so you are here”. God said, “Now you will grow. Your branches will spread every where, you will have lots of flowers.  When flowers will blossom, you will be thrilled . Then the bees, hornet (the bumble bee) will be humming or buzzing near you and sit on your flower. You will enjoy them doing such act. After sometime you will be full of fruit all over”.

“God! Please guide me, what do I do as I grow”. “My dear tree! You are really lucky in this universe, that I am giving you a boon that I have not given to any of my creations. You can make your own food with the help of sunlight and water. Your green leaves will be your kitchen where you will cook your food”.

That way the tree was growing, branches spreading every where. Animal, birds started taking shelter. Birds started making their nest and needed more trees.  Animal started eating leaves of the trees. Leaves started giving shade to the unknown travelers.

After some days, the tree was very happy. As the spring arrived, the tree was full of flowers. The entire hornet, bees started humming and started sitting on the flower collecting pollen from flower to flower.

One day, the tree was so happy, when it saw a tiny fruit in its branch. Within no time, the whole tree was full of fruits. When fruits started ripening, man collected it below, then climbed on it and tasted them. The tree was smiling and happily sharing the fruits with mankind.

God was watching this from the Heaven and felt very happy. One night, He came and stood near it and told “what you are exhaling will be beneficial for mankind. Whatever they are exhaling, you have to take it for your life and benefit from them. I haven’t given any boon to them. They always have to depend on you . They would not be making or cooking anything without your help. So they will be using your branches for burning and cooking.

Lastly God came to mankind and said, “I sent the tree for your benefit, so you have to be dependent on trees. All your wishes will be fulfilled if you help the trees to grow. Like trees if you help others, by serving the mankind and fulfill its necessities, you will be my favorite. If you protect the trees, which will be beneficial to you indirectly, you will be indirectly pleasing Me”.

God said, “Serving the mankind is the biggest worship of the Lord”.
